Perimenopause
Perimenopause is the time between premenopause (regular cycles of ovulation) and menopause (permanent infertility). Premenopause is when the ovaries are functioning perfectly and there’s perfect harmony among all of the body’s hormones. Menopause is the time where many of the major hormones are in decline or at a deficiency state.
It’s during perimenopause that a woman’s body undergoes biologic changes as her ovaries begin to produce less of the female sex hormones. In this middle zone, there are good levels of some hormones and others that are starting to fall.
It’s the imbalance of hormones that can cause many of a woman’s unpleasant symptoms.
Women begin this transition at different ages: some prematurely as early as their 30s, but most others in their 40’s. Perimenopause can last more than six years, though four years is the average. A woman is considered to have reached full menopause after she has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period.
The symptoms of perimenopause, which can be wide-ranging, can include:
- Irregular (longer, shorter, heavier or lighter) periods
- Menstrual cycles that are more or less than 28 days apart
- Hot flashes or hot flushes
- Mood changes/mood swings
- Sleep problems/insomnia
- Vaginal dryness
- “Foggy” brain or lack of mental clarity
